TCL has revealed a 98-inch mini-LED QLED television at CES 2023, the largest screen the company has released to date.
The TCL 98-inch Class XL Collection 4K UHD QLED Dolby Vision HDR Smart Google TV is the flagship of TCL’s new Q-Series, which features three models: the Q6, Q7, and the high-end Q8, which is the only one available with the 98 inch screen.
This comes as the company refreshes its naming conventions, dividing its TVs into the high-end QLED-based Q Series, and the S Series, which scoops up the affordable, non-QLED televisions.
All three models in the Q-series will feature a bezel-less design and a TCL’s new ‘HighBright’ QLED display.
The Q6 (pictured above) is the lower-end of the three, with a ‘standard’ HighBright screen, which TCL claims gives 66 per cent more brightness than non-QLED screen, and a 120Hz variable refresh rate.
Q7 (below) offers “double the peak nits” with HighBright Pro, plus 240Hz VRR for gaming, through AMD’s FreeSync Premium Pro.
The Q7 also offers Dolby Vision IQ, IMAX Enhanced certification, and hands-free voice commands.
The Q8 gives a HighBright Ultra panel, which is twice as bright as last year’s mini-LED range, and five times as many local dimming zones – which TCL claims reaches over 2,300 on the 98-inch model.
TCL claims this is more than any television available, including all 8K models.
The Q8 also sports a 240Hz variable refresh rate, Auto Game Mode, and WiFi 6 support, while Natural Motion 480 gives a smoothness to even the most demanding graphic onslaught.
There’s also a built-in subwoofer, which is an interesting addition, given the bezel-less screen. No audio specifications were shared for the speaker.
It is available in 65-, 75-, and 85-inch models, as well as the 98-incher.
“Mini-LED has been accepted as the benchmark for delivering the amazing level of brightness and our HighBright ULTRA Display executes on the promise of QLED color like no other TV technology can,” explains TCL spokesperson Bruce Walker.
“Bringing twice the brightness of lasts year’s Mini-LED TVs, and up to 5x the number of local dimming zones, up to an industry-leading 2,300+ zones, means searingly bright specular highlights right next to deep rich blacks! We also incorporate all the great gaming features found on the Q7, add IMAX Enhanced Certification and a breathtaking new cosmetic design, and you get the ultimate home theatre TV.”
The RRP for the 98-inch version is US $8,499.99 (A$12,599) and we’ll update with local availability and pricing once that information is available.
