In a surprise move, Telstra has upped the price of international phone roaming for its mobile customers – with travellers to many popular destinations finding they will have to pay hundreds of dollars more per month.

It has changed the terms of many International Travel Passes sold to customers travelling abroad. The passes come with phone call and download allowances covering most of the world including UK, Indonesia and the USA.

Travellers to Britain and USA will have to pay $450 for a monthly travel pass – the prixe was previously $300. Travellers to Thailand and Indonesia will pay $70 rather than $35 for a seven-day pass.

Cost of exceeding the data limit has more than tripled from three cents a megabyte to 10 cents. However data allowances have been increased. A three-day pass will now come with 225 megabytes instead of 150MB; a 30-day pass will come with 2.2GB instead of 1.5GB.
