Telstra claims to have kicked an early goal at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where preparations are under way for Saturday’s AFL grand final.A 3G upgrade by Telstra at the MCG is claimed to cater for spectators’ growing demand to use their smartphones at major sporting events – with possibly as many as 100,000 able to be online at once. It’s not a scene generally regarded as encouraging for online telecoms use.
“Over the past 15 months, we have undertaken a range of projects to increase wireless network capacity at the MCG, not only improving capacity for Telstra customers at Saturday’s grand final, but for other major events in the future,” said Mike Wright, Telstra’s executive director of networks and access technologies.
“This will better cater for the ever-growing number of people who now use their smartphones not simply to make calls or send text messages, but for uploading photo and video content to social media sites,” he said.
