Telstra has switched on the first Wi-Fi hotspots in its national network, today announcing plans to roll out the service to 100 towns and cities before Christmas.Starting today, the free Wi-Fi trial will be available at locations including Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall, Hyde Park in Sydney and King George Square in Brisbane, with Telstra switching on the first 150 hotspots.
Telstra stated it will bring the trial to 1,000 sites ahead of the network’s official launch early next year.
“This trial marks the beginning of our ambition to switch on more than two million hotspots across the nation over five years and give customers the best Wi-Fi experience in and out of the home,” commented Telstra retail group executive Gordon Ballantyne.
“Today we are also confirming the next hotspot locations set to go live ahead of Christmas, bringing the number of trial sites to 1,000. We have selected towns, regional hubs and holiday destinations where we know people will be spending time this holiday season.”
The first Wi-Fi trials will be located at payphone sites, while in the future Telstra hotspots will also be located at Telstra retail outlets and exchange buildings.
