SYDNEY – Electric car and space travel entrepreneur Elon Musk’s Tesla group is preparing to begin marketing its revolutionary Powerwall home battery systems in Australia before Christmas, according to an Australian IT report.Tesla Energy spokesman Health Walker said Australian partners – such as
solar panel companies and installers – would be announced within days, and the
Down Under rollout would occur “early next year”.
He said Australia would join the US, Canada and Germany as the first countries
to get Powerwalls.
The large battery unit which can be installed as a large wall mounted unit –
see picture – stores power generated in off-peak time and makes it available
for peak-time use.
Walker said Australia’s climate, existing use of solar panels, increasing power
prices and the existence of a utility payment system for people who provide
battery power to the grid make Australia an attractive market for Tesla.
Tesla currently offers two Powerwall models: a 7 kWh unit with a daily cycle
designed for home use, and a 10 kWh model that stores power for a week, for
back-up use.
In the US the units wholesale for US$3000 and $3500 respectively.
