Thousands of BigPond customers have been told that their broadband account with Telstra has been suspended following the distribution of a spam alert that prompts consumers to log into their account.
The email prompts consumers to log into what appears to be a Telstra web address. Once the address is activated consumers are then prompted to fill in their user name and password.
Text in the bogus email claims that the e-mail has been sent by BigPond because Telstra has been unable to process recent bill payments.
The email says:
This might be due to either of the following reasons:
1. A recent change in your personal information. (eg: billing address, phone)
2. Submitting incorrect information during bill payment process.
Due to this, to ensure that your service is not interrupted, we request you to confirm and update your billing information today by clicking here.
If you have already confirmed your billing information then please disregard this message as we are processing the changes you have made. Regards, BigPond Billing Department.
Craig Middelton a Telstra spoksperson said “Telstra and BigPond will never request passwords, account verification, credit card or other financial details, or personal information by email. Such information is only requested and collected as part of legitimate business processes on our secure web pages”.
They also warned BigPond customers beware of unsolicited requests for information. Only provide information in response to an expected request or one you have initiated.
Check a web site address carefully to ensure the site is operated by Telstra or BigPond. If in doubt, start at a trusted location such as www.telstra.com or www.bigpond.com and navigate to the desired page. Bogus web pages are always hosted on sites unrelated to Telstra, BigPond or partners.
