A nifty – and some would say niche – product that has just seen the light of day is the Turbobeam, a turbine ventilator that rids your roof or attic of hot air..

Looking like a translucent chimney circa 1950s/60s, it is said to replace the hot air with cooler, ambient air.

Its clear turbine head, which sits on a reflective aluminium throat, doubles as a skylight to assist homeowners to use roof space for storage in attic rooms and creates much needed light for sheds while significantly reducing heat. In addition, the extra light in attic space assists visibility and acts as a deterrent for termites and rodents.

Manufacturer Edmonds claims the unit has a smooth, aerodynamic profile with a clear head, which complements almost any style from modern design to heritage style homes.

Tested in many harsh environments Turbobeam can withstand wind velocities of 240km/hr, is hail resistance, great for coastal regions and easy to install.

“The Turbobeam has been designed and developed to offer optimum ventilation to ensure home comfort and to reduce energy consumption,” claims Edmonds Product Manager Michael Nolan.

Our first reaction was “why not just buy an air conditioning unit?” However, Edmonds believes the modest energy consumption of the Turbobeam, plus its relatively cheap cost and install, will be a viable alternative to traditional cooling methods in a house.
