A new TV war is set to erupt in Australia with LG tipped to launch new OLED TV’s, along with two new Ultra High Definition (4K) TV’s in coming weeks, meanwhile Sony has announced a 4K media player along with 4K content.
Sony US has overnight revealed pricing for their 55-inch XBR-55X900A, at $5,000 while 65-inch XBR-65X900A will come in at around $7,000. Pricing for the Sony 4K TV’s is set to be around the same in Australia.
Sony has also announced a 4K media player the FMP-X1 which will stream content to their new TV’s. Both the new 4K TV’s and the media are not expected till later this year.
When it does go on sale the FMP-X1 4K Media Player is set to be sold with bundled with 10 feature 4K movies and video’s all shot in true 4K resolution, among the movies will be the classic film Lawrence of Arabia, which was recently remastered in 4K resolution by Sony Pictures.
Sony said its Sony Pictures Home Entertainment company will also begin to market a line-up of new “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray Discs with 1080p high-definition pictures derived from “the highest quality 4K source materials.” Shortly with the content set to be available in Australia in the last quarter of 2013.
The special Blu-ray titles will feature expanded colour that’s optimised for the 4K Ultra HD TVs and plays back on all existing Blu-ray players and HDTV, Sony said.
Sony customers will also be able to access 4K content online from a Sony library of 4K video’s and movies.
The included feature films are: “Bad Teacher,” “Battle: Los Angeles,” “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” “The Karate Kid (2010),” “Salt,” “Taxi Driver,” “That’s My Boy,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Other Guys” and “Total Recall (2012).”
The 55″ LG OLED 55EM970V which was one of the stars at the 2013 CES Show is set to be priced over $12,000 and will go on sale in the second half of 2013 in Australia.
Also tipped are two new LG 4K panels including a 55″ and 65″ model.
