Twitter has acquired machine learning company Whetlab, with the social network confirming its acquisition of the start-up via a tweet, stating it is looking to accelerate its machine learning efforts.Details of the acquisition, including the financial terms, have not been revealed, with possible applications of Whetlab tech including more intuitive cataloguing of tweets.
Whetlab describes its system as comprising “sophisticated machine learning techniques” designed to get in-house machine learning systems off the ground, automatically.
“Rather than having to hire doctorate-wielding machine learning experts to architect and tune your system, our patent-pending technology helps your engineers – your team that already understands your data and your needs – get the latest and greatest deep-learning techniques going in days rather than months or years,” the company states of its tech.
The tech behind Whetab was developed by researchers at Harvard, Toronto and Sherbrooke universities.
“Over the past year, we have created a technology to make machine learning better and faster for companies, automatically,” Whetlab has stated via its website.
“Twitter is the platform for open communication on the internet and we believe that Whetlab’s technology can have a great impact by accelerating Twitter’s internal machine learning efforts.”
