Sony is set to roll out a PS3 firmware upgrade that allows users to switch on PlayStation Plus. The 3.40 update will be needed to get all the extras attached to the paid service, such as free games, early access betas and Qore.
Among the new features is the addition of a video editor which allows users to edit unprotected movies and post them to sites like Facebook or YouTube.
Social networks play a larger part elsewhere as there’s now an Internet-connected photo gallery that can see photos both on the local network as well as on Facebook and Picasa; viewers can comment on photos from the web. Facebook is getting a companion web app that will support friend requests and statuses as well as pushing updates about purchases and trophies. Store content now has a rating system, and the PS3 will now shut itself off after two hours of inactivity to further cut back on power.
Sony hasn’t said when the 3.40 patch will be live, but PlayStation Plus is due to start as soon as the end of the month.
