Vodafone is the latest telco who is dipping its toes in the streaming market partnering with Netflix launching Vodafone TV.
It is offering an open version of Android TV where users can not only access Netflix but Google services such as YouTube, Chromecast and Google Play for TV and Movies. Google search is also featured on the device with the telco planning to install Google Assistant in the near future.
The telco wants everyone to enjoy the product which also has a free to air input so there is no “HDMI shuffle for the TV” when users want to change inputs.
Vodafone will be competing with Optus with its Fetch TV Box and Telstra TV and with the addition of Netflix even puts Apple TV on its radar.
Vodafone says this streaming box is for everyone not just its customers.
Ben McIntosh, consumer unit business director at Vodafone says he wants the company to lead the way be a global brand presence to data democratisation with this new streaming box.
The telco will be offering a 12 month free subscription to Netflix for those who access their NBN plans which start from $59 a month for its basic 12mbps plan, $79 a month for the essentials plus plan and $99 per month for the NBN premium deal.
The service will be available from mid-April from $120 outright or an addition $5 on an existing Vodafone plan.
