Vodafone has gone quiet on why their network in NSW suffered a meltdown over the weekend leaving customers without access to voice or data capabilities on their smartphones and tablets. The carrier, who is currently rolling out a new network, was not available on Sunday to explain what happened.
Customers were told via the Company’s website that consumers living in NSW are experiencing “issues accessing 2G voice services and 3G voice and data” and that they were “working to resolve” the issue.
The network’s free customer-service line had a 30-minute waiting period for customers wanting to talk to a Vodafone spokesperson.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald By 6.30pm on Saturday night the customer line had been closed down with one insider claiming that they were “overwhelmed” by calls.
Traffic on Twitter revealed that the entire NSW network had crashed.
One customer, Sarah Brown, wrote on Twitter that her Samsung phone stopped working completely at noon: “I have had no reception. I had to take the battery out,” Ms Brown from Darlinghurst said.
Late in 2010, thousands of customers complained en masse about drop-outs, poor reception and capacity problems, which led to the carrier losing more than 70,000 customers.
