The International Consumer Electronics Show kicks off in Las Vegas this week with a lot of new technology set to go on show. This is a trade event where vendors show retailers and resellers their new offering which in some cases will never see the light of say because of a poor response from the resellers.

While last year was 3D and slim TV’s this year is going to be about Internet enabled TV’s, Tablets, Intel Sandy Bridge processor technology and Tablets.
Android based devices will be on show from over 30 vendors.

SmartHouse and ChannelNews will be there, from the first press event on Wednesday morning to the nine major press events on Thursday which is 24 hours before the show actually opens its doors.

This is my 15th CES show and one thing that I have learnt is that some of the best products are shown at private functions hidden away in executive suites and at hotels scattered along Los Vegas Boulevard.

One of the first press conferences will be the LG event when we will be shown new Internet enabled TV’s, new 3D TVs and an Android Honeycomb 8.5″ Tablet. This will be followed by events from Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic and Intel who will show their Sandy Bridge chips, which is a brand new architecture that’s designed to significantly improve game play and speed video encoding on systems without the need for discrete graphics cards. Video displays are set to run in sync with the processing.

The first tests of systems with Sandy Bridge processors should be published soon, but Intel’s demonstrations of laptops armed with the chips were impressive. Video encoding tasks took a fraction of the time required by previous generation chips, despite putting a much smaller load on the system’s CPU.

Intel says Sandy Bridge chips are more power efficient and easier to overclock and can be used on a new generation of notebooks and PC’s which will not be cheap.
One category where the new Intel processor will excel is in all in one PC’s.

A big drawcard is set to be new Tablets with HTC, Motorola, ASUS, Acer and LG set to reveal new offerings.

While most will run Android 2.4 (“Honeycomb”) some will show a 3.0 version. This is the first version of Google’s OS to be optimised for tablets. Products are expected to hit Australia in the second quarter.
Some manufacturers are expected to show Tablets powered by Windows 7 with Steve Ballmer CEO of Microsoft set to show a HP model during his keynote on Wednesday night.
While 3D was all the go last year vendors are set to be cautious after consumers rejected the technology because of a lack of content and a dislike of 3D glasses.

This year vendors are tipped to introduce new 3D TV models that can be used with polarized glasses which is the same as those found in Cinema’s.

Several vendors have already given us the heads up on new LED TV’s which are thin and incorporate new display engines.

While it’s not a sexy product we will see a lot of USB 3.0 devices.

This technology theoretical delivers a 10x increase in transfer speeds and while it’s been around for over 12c months, it hasn’t been used all that much by consumers. That’s because most people don’t have a computer with a USB 3.0 port.

But that should change with a lot of vendors set to launch devices with a USB 3.0 port including a lot of TV manufacturers.

My big tip for CES 2011 is Toshiba who will deliver a new range of small TV’s that don’t need 3D glasses as well as TV’s with Skype and Internet TV capability.
