Why Has Samsung Suddenly Stopped Reviews Of Their New Samsung Series 7 Slate?

Mystery surrounds the sudden suspension of reviews for the recently launched Samsung Series 7 Windows Slate after a scathing review of the device by the Financial Review. It has also been criticised for its battery life by overseas reviewers.

Back in November several journalists were asked to inspect the new device and on the surface it looked and performed several functions well.

When SmartHouse asked for an on sale model for review we were told that this would happen within days. At the time I was suspicious that the device was only being launched because of the decision by the Federal court to ban the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

We then got a call saying that the device was being shipped to us. A short time later and only a few hours after the Financial Review’s assessment was published, Samsung PR advisers told SmartHouse that Samsung management had ordered the review offer to be withdrawn and that they would come back to us within days.

Two months later and following the scathing review in the Financial Review we are still we are still waiting to see the controversial device which runs on the old Windows 7 platform and not the tablet-tailored Windows 8.

Davidson who was one of the first to conduct a review of the controversial Samsung Slate wrote: “I’m typing this week’s column into a Samsung Series 7 Slate PC, which ought to be renamed the Series 7 Late PC given the penchant the Slate’s keyboard has for dropping the first letter off words.”

“It’s a battery-operated Bluetooth keyboard, you see, and as far as we can figure, the keyboard keeps going to sleep to save batteries.” He said that first keystroke after an extended pause wakes up the keyboard, but that keystroke never gets sent to the computer Davidson wrote.

He went on to say that the Windows 7 isn’t a particularly good operating system for tablets and that the device is still just a little too fiddly to be controlled easily with your fingers, the way you can with other tablet operating systems such as Android and the iPad operating system, iOS.

The model tested by the Financial Review cost “$1599, runs a 1.6GHz Second Generation Intel Core i5 processor, which would also have been more like a desktop PC if only it ran a little faster.”

Engadget in the USA said recently that the Series 7 Slate PC was “built by the same team behind the striking Series 9 laptop, making it one of the slickest business tablets we’ve ever beheld. It rocks an 11.6-inch display that handily dwarfs pretty much everything else out there. It runs a Core i5, not Atom, processor, and is offered with a custom dock and Bluetooth keyboard. The Series 7 Slate isn’t just a rare Windows 7 tablet; it’s also one of the most memorable.”

The reviewers went on to say that the Series 7 Slate was a “serious-looking thing, with full-sized ports, a charcoal, brushed aluminium lid and three vents hinting at the powerful Core i5 CPU that lies beneath. It has style, to be sure, but also the kind of gravitas that makes even the Transformer Prime look like a toy in comparison.”

See the Engadget review here.

What Engadget did criticise was the battery life of the Series 7 Slate, a comparison chart showed why.

And this, friends, is why a tablet running Windows 7 on a Core i5 processor might not be such a fantastic idea.
