After the relative flop of its Windows 8 software, Microsoft today begins rolling out Windows 10, quietly skipping past the Windows 9 moniker.
Current Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users get to upgrade to 10 for free – a word not usually in the Microsoft lexicon – at least for the first year.
Windows 10 will ship with a bunch of new PC features, including its Cortana audio assistant – an answer to Apple’s Siri and Android’s OK Google – and integration with Redmond’s Xbox One gaming console and its Xbox Live online component.
Millions of beta testers who enrolled in Microsoft’s “Insider Preview” program will be among the first to receive the Windows 10 final release.
Dell is one of the few major computer manufacturers to offer Windows 10 computers on its official release day, at least in the USA. It will begin installing the new OS on new laptops immediately, and promises next-business-day delivery for a number of its models.
