Windows users are being urged to uninstall Apple’s QuickTime following the end of Apple support, with the Department of Homeland Security’s United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) issuing an alert on the matter.US-CERT points to information released by Trend Micro that “Apple will no longer be providing security updates for QuickTime for Windows, leaving this software vulnerable to exploitation”.
Via a blog post, Christopher Budd, a global threat communications manager with Trend, writes that “Apple is deprecating QuickTime for Microsoft Windows”, writing that Apple “will no longer be issuing security updates for the product on the Windows platform and recommend users uninstall it”.
Budd also writes that Trend’s Zero Day Initiative has released two advisories detailing two new, critical vulnerabilities affecting QuickTime for Windows.
“Computers running QuickTime for Windows will continue to work after support ends,” US-CERT writes. “However, using unsupported software may increase the risks from viruses and other security threats.
“Potential negative consequences include loss of confidentiality, integrity, or availability of data, as well as damage to system resources or business assets.”
