As Sony’s PlayStation Networks has more down time than up time, XBox 360 sales are soaring.
Microsoft said on Saturday that sales of its game console have reached 55 million, with 35 million XBox Live members across the planet.
In the first four months of 2011, Xbox 360 has seen a 29 per cent year over year increase in sales, which is more than triple the growth of PlayStation 3 and the largest growth of any console on the market.
Eurogamer reports that Xbox 360 is five million consoles ahead of PlayStation 3, which as of last month had sold 50 million units worldwide.
Microsoft released the Xbox info ahead of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, that kicks off Tuesday Australian time in L.A.
Sony claims that it sold 14.3 million PlayStation 3 units in 2010, the most since launching in 2006.
But Microsoft and Sony still are way behind Nintendo Wii. In the first quarter of 2011, more than 86 million Wii units were sold worldwide.
It’s also tipped that Microsoft is set to expand further into the TV content market, with Winrumors and others claiming that Microsoft will announce an Xbox LIVE subscription TV service next week at the E3 Expo in L.A.
Microsoft has been in talks with cable networks to produce content. If true, it would be Microsoft’s answer Apple’s unveiling of its iCloud music streaming service. In February, Amazon added streaming TV and movies to its Prime subscription plan.
