Microsoft’s Xbox One S & One X consoles will reportedly soon support Dolby Vision – news which intensifies competition against Apple’s 4K TV and Google’s Chromecast Ultra, as the only streaming devices to currently support both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

As an added sweetener, Xbox’s major rival, Sony’s PlayStation 4, does not fully support Dolby Atmos or Dolby Vision.

Dolby Vision is set to significantly trump HDR10 on the Xbox One, via claims of increased colour depth and brightness.

Published to Xbox’s Newsroom, Microsoft is currently trialling Dolby Vision support with Xbox Insiders.

The feature is thus far restricted to streaming apps, with wider rollout tipped to occur in coming weeks.

It appears Netflix is one of the first apps to receive Dolby Vision support on the Xbox One S/One X. It’s not clear whether Microsoft intends to extend this to Blu-ray.

Whilst an immediate change won’t occur on many current TV models, Dolby Vision with HDR10 is tipped to increase the Xbox’s longevity amidst rapidly increasing display quality.
