Xiaomi has officially launched its Mi Mix 3 5G – the cheapest 5G smartphone currently in the Australian market – which sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and the Snapdragon X50 5G modem.
Available from Xiaomi’s online store for $1,399, the company promises to deliver to the Australian market a “premium 5G smartphone without the premium 5G price”.
By comparison, some other 5G-ready devices already available in the market include the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and Note 10+ 5G (both $1,999), the Huawei Mate X ($3,700), the OPPO Reno 5G ($1,499), and the LG V50 ThinQ ($1,728).
With the integration of the Snapdragon X50 5G modem, Mi Mix 3 5G has the ability to connect to sub-6GHz signal that has gigabit-class download speeds – 10 times faster than 4G network speeds- and can sustain long and stable peak performance thanks to the newly designed hybrid cooling system.
The Rogers HeatSORB thermal material implements a phase change effect that quickly captures heat generated by the device under demanding scenarios and delays temperature increases.
From here, a passive heat pipe composed of six layers of graphite disperses heat at, according to Xiaomi, a speed “three times faster than a typical dual graphite sheet”.
It also achieves an extreme screen-to-body ratio due to the device’s slider design and extremely thin bezels.
In terms of the camera, it comes with the same 12MP AI dual camera found on the non-5G model, as well as all the AI features expected from Xiaomi’s smartphones, including 960fps slow-motion video capabilities.
For selfies, Mi Mix 3 5G offers a 24MP + 2MP dial camera setup, making great use of Sony’s IMX576 sensor to capture more detail.

In addition to the new 5G-ready device, Xiaomi also officially launched its new MiBand 4, the latest iteration of its range of activity tracking devices, for $59.95 from Xiaomi’s online store.
It comes with a 135mAh battery, capabilities to deal with NFC payments, as well as a number of activity tracking features including for outdoor running, treadmill workouts, cycling, walking, cardio and pool swimming.
