Samsung Electronics who is already the most successful consumer technology company in the world is set to launch new Smart TVs a new Windows tablet PC and several devices that don’t need cables when within a metre of each other.Claiming that 3D sales are set to double in 2011 the company said that “For next year, Smart TV will be the mainstay of their consumer technology push” according to Kevin Lee, vice president of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business.
At the 2011 International CES Samsung demonstrated new application TVs, new digital cameras a unique Windows based Tablet that fits into a keyboard base allowing it to operate similar to a notebook.
Samsung said that the bulk of future TVs sold in Australia will be Internet enabled that come with embedded chipsets and an operating software that enables users to easily download applications and content from the Internet, and also helps them watch videos and applications run from other hand-held gadgets.
The Wall street Journal reported that in the second-quarter of last year, Samsung grabbed around 51 percent of the market share in the global smart TV category, and that in the number of applications now available was over 200. In Australia Samsung TV’s have less than 10 applications.
Despite a consumer backlash to 3D TVs Samsung is determined to keep pushing 3D technology as part of their Smart TV offering.
“One of the biggest challenges for 3-D TVs last year was the price. But from this year, we are also prepared to offer customers not only premium sets but more models with an affordable price,” added Lee.
3-D television requires users to wear special glasses and Samsung said it will supply prescription glasses, so that users who already wear glasses can enjoy watching the TV without having to wear two pair of glasses.
The lack of content tailored for 3D TVs, along with its price and the inconvenience of viewing it through glasses have been major obstacles for its sales, market watchers said.
The electronics giant said it plans to introduce more 3-D compatible content by teaming up with global content providers this year.
In the race for ever-thinner, ever-bigger displays, Samsung also said its bezel, or the outer edge of the light-emitting-diode backlit panel, will be the world’s thinnest next year, narrowing to a thickness of 5 millimeters from 24 millimeters last year.
