ICM Registry, the guys trying to get the .XXX domain up, has has decided to take the U.S. Government to court.
After their unsuccessful plans to introduce the .xxx Internet domain meant to delimit the web site which contain pornographic content, A few days ago, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) – the American-based authority that handles domain names over the Internet – has rejected ICM Registry’s initiative of introducing the .xxx domain name. The most significant reasons for that were the opposition that the .xxx domain encountered from the conservative and religious factions which considered it a foul thing, as well as the lack of support from the adult industry representatives which saw such domains as a means to restrict their freedom or even impose censorship easier.
However, ICM Registry is decided not to give up, claiming that the decision that the ICANN has taken was influenced by Washington authorities, and will be filing a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC) in the Washington district of Columbia. ICM Registry considers that the U.S. DoC has been withholding information regarding a freedom of information act (FOIA) request made in October 2005 and now hopes to gain access to it.
It seems that Stuart Lawley, the head of ICM Registry, believes that this information is able to give the “extra evidence that provides the irrefutable proof” which demonstrate the US Government’s involvement, according to Times Online, even if the DoC keeps saying that it “plays no role” in this matter.
