Phorus has launched an Android wi-fi home entertainment system with play-fi.
Phorus’ new PS1 Speaker can play music streamed from your Android device over your home WiFi network without any degradation in sound quality. By adopting the new Play-Fi standard, it’s easy to play music from your Android smartphone or tablet wirelessly across one-or even a network of-Phorus devices. Nor does it discriminate Apple devices as it features Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
Under the PS1’s pretty skin is some serious hardware, (especially when you consider its friendly pricetag). There’s an advanced dual-core digital signal processor, 2 neodymium transducers and Dual Class D amplifiers.
As eye-catching as the PS1 is, we’re particularly impressed by Phorus’ PR1 receiver because it adds wireless smarts to our already gutsy sound systems. With the PR1 receiver attached, legacy speakers and sound systems can receive quality music as it is streamed from your Android device. The PR1 will also make legacy speaker systems a part of your modular Play-Fi setup. Phorus’ PS1 and PR1 are available now for $349.95 and $279.95 respectively.
Why Play-Fi is Awesome
Play-Fi is a new standard that allows Android smartphones and tablets to stream music over a home WiFi network. This is advantageous because unlike Bluetooth, which often compresses audio files and subsequently discounts music quality, streaming over Play-Fi will deliver “zero loss in sound quality.” Play-Fi can enable the same song to be played over multiple compatible speakers, infusing a whole house with some serious sound. Alternatively there’s always the option of a private session between you and just one speaker.
Downloading the free Play-Fi app from Google’s Play store will enable Android devices to play music from Pandora, from internet radio stations or from their local music library over their speaker network.
Currently Phorus is the first company to incorporate Play-Fi into their products; however, other speakers-think of the Wren V5PF speaker we covered-can reap its benefits too.
