
Latest research from IDC forecasts 5G smartphones to hit 212 million by 2020. The firm expects the first 5G handsets to commercially launch in the second half of 2019, before ramping up in most global regions the year after.
5G devices are forecast to represent 7% of all global smartphones in 2020, notching 18% by 2022.
Reported by Taiwanese trade publication, DigiTimes, the average selling price of a smartphone is tipped to reach US$345 this year [A$452] – up around 10% from 2017.
By 2022, IDC predicts the average selling price of a smartphone to reach US$362 [A$474].
Android smartphone growth is forecast to remain ‘stable’ – around 85% of total global shipments – totalling 1.4 billion units by 2022.
Apple’s iPhone shipments are tipped to grow 2.6% this year to 221 million, notching 242 million by 2022.
