Gartner’s latest report has forecast that 80% of smartphones will have “on-device artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities” by 2022 – a significant increase from 10% recorded in 2017.
At current, on-device AI is limited to high-end smartphones, including those powered by Snapdragon 820/821/835, Kirin 970 and Apple’s A11 Bionic (found in the iPhone X).
Gartner states that on-device AI provides better data protection and power management than full cloud-based AI (as it is stored and processed locally).
CK Lu, Research Director at Gartner, claims that on-device AI will soon provide consumers with better problem solving capabilities via their smartphones:
“Future AI capabilities will allow smartphones to learn, plan and solve problems for users. This isn’t just about making the smartphone smarter, but augmenting people by reducing their cognitive load. However, AI capabilities on smartphones are still in very early stages”.
Gartner has identified ten functionalities of “AI-powered smartphones”:
- Tracking a user’s movements through the day
- Increased password recognition
- Emoticon recognition
- Improved speech recognition
- Augmented Reality & AI Vision
- Machine learning and better user understanding
- Personal profiling
- Content censorship/detection
- Personalised photography
- Audio analystics
