The PlayStation 3 breaks the boundaries of ‘gaming console’ by seating itself at the heart of the home theatre as a complete media hub. It runs video games like any good console is supposed to, but it’s also a self-housed Blu-ray player that can sit inside your home network as a network storage device. Sony’s kept its eye on the future and has this year thrown subscription movie and music services like Qriocity into the mix to stream content onto the PS3. The PlayStation 3 pushed boundaries when it was first released, though it’s stayed relevant beyond the gimmick appeal on the Nintendo Wii by constantly delivering new content in newer ways. It was once the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market, and now it’s the cheapest way to turn your ordinary TV into a smart TV.

Batman: Arkham City

Bursting beyond the walls of Arkham Asylum, Gotham’s most insane crooks have taken over the city with the lunacy of the Joker, the fatale of Harley Quinn and the menace of Two Face. Gotham’s goons have been worked over with more character complementing their brawn, instead of looking like a generic bunch of crims. And fighting the almost ubiquitous pantheon of evil doers is the rising Knight. With balletic battles, violence and character depth, the latest range of Batman games (and movies) position Batman not as a hero, but as a man learning to transcend the brutal death of his parents, and old-fashioned understandings of good and evil. It doesn’t have to be better than its acclaimed Arkham Asylum predecessor to be a winner: it just needs to be as good.
