ANZ has launched a mobile payments app, allowing customers to make payments and withdraw cash with a compatible Android smartphone.Customers with an Android smartphone can download the ANZ Mobile Pay app from the Google Play store from today, available for Android mobile phones with NFC running Android 4.4 KitKat or above.

Once having downloaded and opened the app, users will need to tap “Add a card”, holding their card to the back of their mobile and moving it around until it is detected before entering their details.

The service supports a range of ANZ Visa and American Express credit cards, as well as ANZ Visa debit cards.

Customers have three payment options: Wake to Pay, waking up the smartphone without unlocking it and tapping on any contactless payment terminal, Launch to Pay, launching the app and tapping the phone on a contactless payment terminal when seeing the “Ready to pay!” banner, and Passcode to Pay, launching the app then entering the passcode, making contactless payment.

Customers will need to enter their PIN for all payments over $100.

Competition is intensifying in the mobile payments space, with NAB having earlier in the year launched NAB Pay, with the Commonwealth Bank and Westpac also offering mobile payments services.

Google last year announced that it would be bringing its Android Pay service to Australia in the first half of this year, working with financial institutions including ANZ, Westpac, Bank of Melbourne, Bank of South Australia, Bendigo Bank, Cuscal, ING Direct, Macquarie Bank and St. George.

Meanwhile, Apple Pay launched in Australia towards the end of last year for American Express card holders, with it not known when or which banks will support the service, with interchange fees reportedly an issue.

“ANZ Mobile Pay delivers a payments solution for our customers to help them take full advantage of the rapidly changing digital environment we live in, including the ability to withdraw cash from contactless-enabled ANZ ATMs with a tap of their phone,” ANZ managing director products and marketing Matt Boss commented.

“Customers using ANZ Mobile Pay will be able to add their existing credit or debit card, and then simply tap their mobile phone for purchases at contactless retail locations anywhere in the world with the security we provide for all online and digital transactions.”
