Optus says all of the group matches for the World Cup will be broadcast on SBS until the end of the group stage.
Australians will now be able to watch the World Cup for free on the Special Broadcasting Service.
Allen Lew chief executive at Optus says the telco was confident it had fixed the problems which have plagued its streaming service so far, but it wanted to provide Australians with choice.
“I don’t have regrets about spending the money. We’ve created some very significant differentiation in what we’ve done with live streaming sports. We’re not perfect, we’ve made a mistake, but we hope the goodwill we’ve done in terms of giving Australians choice will allow them to give us another chance.”
The telco originally gave six games to SBS after a number of customers experienced streaming delays and intermittent service causing outrage over social media.
Those who have paid to access Optus Sport for the world cup will be refunded $15.
Optus Sport will also be made free for all Aussies until August 31.
