Netflix is believed to be close to switch off access to their content for possibly thousands of Australians who are accessing their content via an unauthorised app installed on a TV by Chinese manufacturers.
SmartHouse has been told that questions have been raised about the integration of Netflix into some TV’s with the Netflix app not loading quickly and when the Netflix logo on a remote is pressed it is supposed to not only start the TV bug go straight to the Netflix service
Netflix claims that when you see the “Netflix Recommended TV” logo, it means that device has passed rigorous testing to ensure great performance and easy access to Netflix and other services. The US Content Company lists the follow as key requirements for a TV partner.
TV instant on: The TV starts up instantly and apps are ready to use right away, like a phone.
Fast app launch: The Netflix app always launches quickly, whether it’s right after turning on the TV or after using several other apps.
Netflix button: The Netflix button on the remote-control powers on the TV as well as launches Netflix, so you can start your TV and get to Netflix with the press of a single button.
Easy Netflix icon access: The Netflix app is easy to access and convenient to launch from the TV menu.
TV resume: The TV remembers what you were doing and wakes to the same place as when it was turned off.
High-res Netflix interface: Browse Netflix in 1080p resolution, with crisper text and clearer images.
Android TV’s such as those from Sony and Philips run an Android operating system however some TV’s sold in Australia load an app from an embedded processor that is not necesarily Netflix approved.
The problem is that several Chinese OEM TV manufacturers have been unable to get official Netflix endorsement for the TV’s instead they have created an app that basically links the TV with an Internet version of Netflix. ChannelNews has been told that hundreds of these TV’s now being sold in Australia.
A visit to the Netflix website reveals only two certified brands for their 2018 models they include, LG 4K UHD TVs with webOS 4.0 and Sony W800F / WF800 series Android TVs. There is no mention of official support for Hisense or TCL TV’s
Netflix claims on their web site that they test all TVs that carry Netflix and will continue to report new designations throughout the year as new devices become available or get updated. Timing of availability for Netflix Recommended TVs will vary by market, and not all models will be available in all regions.
