The boss of CEO, Eric Schmidt has slammed Microsoft calling them an anti competitive organisation he has also said that Companies who want to protect their brand should “not act like Microsoft”.

Speaking in Sydney at the announcement of a new regional development and sales HQ Schmidt also admitted despite several requests from the US government Google does not release data or information to them without checking the legality of the request.

He said “We do not collaborate with the US government to the contrary we vet every approach to ensure that their request is legal”.

Talking on the economy and the recent downturn in global markets he said “The US market has some serious issues and while many people believe that the US economy is in recession we are well positioned to handle any downturn”.

Schmidt  who arrived in Australia this morning said that Australia was an ideal place to develop innovative products and that Google  prefers to measure the distance between Australia and the US, not in kilometers, but in milliseconds. Schmidt said improvements in broadband had made Australia a competitor on the world stage and that technology such as Google Maps was now being developed in Australia and that it was one of Google’s top three success stories.

Schmidt provided scant details on the search giant’s plans for DoubleClick and said legal work still had to be completed on the historic US$3.1 billion acquisition deal – now approved by authorities in the US, Australia and Europe. He did, however, concede that despite all the hype surrounding Google’s display advertising network, online software and video sharing site YouTube, 96% to 97% of Google’s revenue is still generated by its paid search platform, AdWords.

The global credit crunch and likely recession in the US were not of particular concern to Schmidt, who said history shows marketing dollars flee to quality advertising, such as direct marketing, in difficult financial times. “It won’t impact us much,” said Schmidt.ing his visit to Australia Schmidt announced that local telecommunications carrier Optus was implementing the Google search software however the deal is non exclusive.

He also said that the concept of Cloud Computing was gaining momentum and that Facebook a Company that Google have been watching for some months was an excellent operation to attract users to the notion of Cloud Computing as they “have thousands of users who want to store content. They are a fantastic audience to use cloud computing” he said.
