Announced on Wednesday, Google has revealed that Google Home users will be able to make free-of-charge voice calls to any contact via WiFi.
The technology is underpinned by its artificially intelligent ‘Google Assistant’, with users simply starting the command with the standard “Hey Google”.
USA & Canada will be the first to experience the feature, effective today.
At current, the person on the other end of the call will simply see “No caller ID”, however, Google advises this should be fixed by the end of the year.
Google Voice or Project Fi users will be able to show their phone number by changing the Assistant settings in the Google Home app.
While Amazon were the original pioneers of the ‘smart speaker’, the limitation was that users could only call other users who had an Amazon Alexa enabled calling device.
