Rockstar has been flogging its forthcoming gaming title, L.A. Noire to media as the best thing since sliced bread with its MotionScan technology – but it might not be as much of a gimmick as it seems. The MotionScan technology, developed by Sydney-based Depth Analysis, is basically Rockstar’s way of scanning the movements of actors’ faces so that they can be directly paralleled onto the screen in an upgrade to typical motion capture.
In a game, that would seem to mean better graphics and nothing much else, but Team Bondi from Rockstar have cleverly implemented it into the game’s ‘interrogation’ sequences so that it might actually be useful.
Players observe suspects, analysing their behaviour upon asking certain questions, and choose when to ask certain questions, make accusations or present evidence to gain precious information.
MotionScan may actually equate to a unique gameplay experience that proves to be more fun that gimmick.
