Apple has released its macOS Sierra desktop operating system, with it now available as a free update, bringing its Siri personal assistant to the Mac.The update also sees the introduction of a number of other features, including Apple Pay, Universal Clipboard, iCloud Desktop and Documents, and Auto Unlock.
Apple states that Siri can perform functions such as helping to send messages and email, finding documents, looking up information, searching a user’s photo library and adjusting system preferences.
Siri results can be dragged and dropped into documents or pinned into the Today view for later reference.
Universal Clipboard, meanwhile, provides for copy of content from an app on one Apple device, pasting it into another app on a different Apple device.
iCloud Desktop and Documents provides for access of desktop files on an iPhone and iPad, while Auto Unlock provides for automatic log into Mac when users are wearing an authenticated Apple Watch.
“Shoppers can now click the Apple Pay button at checkout on participating websites, and then complete their purchase with Touch ID on iPhone 6 or later or with Apple Watch,” Apple states of the introduction of Apple Pay.
“Users’ credit or debit card information is not shared with online merchants and strong encryption protects all communication between a user’s device and Apple Pay servers.”
Among other features, Photos introduces Memories, highlighting moments in users’ photo libraries, automatically creating curated collections of occasions, with it identifying faces, objects and scenes, allowing photos to be searched by who and what is in them.
Available starting today from the Mac App Store, all Macs introduced since late-2009 are supported by macOS Sierra.
