Reports have surfaced that Microsoft has filed a patent for a redesigned Surface Pro Keyboard that would be significantly thinner and also potentially feature an integrated trackpad into the keyboard’s circuit board.

First reported by WindowsUnited, the patent describes a method by which Microsoft could make the keyboards thinner by carving a trackpad into the circuit board so it is adjustable in relation to portions of the board around it.

Previously, Microsoft offered a Surface Pro Touch Cover which featured a thin profile and fabric keys, the company potentially this new redesign could emulate that cover.

The Surface Pro keyboard has gone through minor improvements throughout its iterations, and older keyboards are compatible with later devices.

A thinner design for the keyboard would fit with rumours that Microsoft will heavily redesign its next Surface Pro.

There are numerous rumours online that Microsoft is considering models with thinner screen bezels, a more rounded design like the Surface Go, and a potential second display.

Microsoft is expected to potentially launch a redesigned Surface Pro by the end of 2019. The Surface Pro 6 is available now from $1,349.
