Online is continuing to grow in Australia with web sites like SmartHouse reporting record growth. Australian online advertising has continued to defy market conditions, racking up more than A$1.7 billion for calendar 2008 – representing an increase of $364.25 million or 27 percent year-on-year.
The figures come from IAB Australia’s Online Advertising Expenditure Report, compiled by PriceWaterhouse Coopers (PwC).
In January 2009 according to Google Analytics and Nielsen Digital, SmartHouse recorded 116% growth for the month over January 2008 and at December 2008 the consumer technology web site had grown more than 35% over 2007 due to more than 3,000,000 unique visitors accessing over 8,000,000 page views.
Expenditure for the fourth-quarter totalled $462 million, an increase of $83.25 million (or 22 percent) on Q4 2007, and $10.75 million (2.4 percent) from Q3 2008.
Paul Fisher, CEO of IAB Australia, says the results demonstrate the growing confidence advertisers and agencies have in online advertising.
Consumer technology, finance, computers and communications and motor vehicles sectors continue to dominate general display ads with recruitment leading classifieds, followed by real estate. Search is growing faster than directories
