Optus has beat Telstra to the punch by unveiling Australia’s first 5G Home Broadband plans – from $70 for unlimited data and a 50Mbps ‘Satisfaction Guarantee’.
In partnership with Nokia, the telco intends to have at least 48 5G sites online by March this year.
Sites are already live in two Canberra suburbs, plus one in Sydney.
Chief Executive, Allen Lew, claims the “off-the-shelf” product will be available from several Optus outlets in the coming months.
“We are working with a range of smartphone manufacturers and will announce details about 5G smartphone handset availability and plans in the future,” he adds.
“When Optus customers have 5G compatible handsets in areas with Optus 5G network coverage they will also be able to experience 5G services on-the-go.”
The telco is inviting registrations from customers who are interested in being the first to experience 5G.
The first 50 Optus 5G sites will cover 60 Australian suburbs, with expressions of interest areas listed below.
Customers will be selected according to 5G serviceability, with initial services expected to be delivered in Q2 2019.
Initial 5G coverage will be limited to certain areas within a suburb – the telco will confirm availability to interested residents.

The telco’s 5G Home Broadband service is underpinned by the delivery of 1,200 5G sites by March 2020.
Sites will include several key customer hotspots including residential locations, CBD areas, airports, train stations and sporting stadiums.
Optus affirms it will gradually open 5G services up to more customers and locations, with the release of more 5G-supported devices and 5G cell roll-outs.
“Whether its bingeing on your favourite series in 4K, taking on a crafty Fortnite opponent, streaming your favourite Party mix on Spotify or live streaming the latest Premier League match – Optus 5G Home Broadband is designed to deliver customers a great, multi-platform experience,” claims Mr Lew.
The telco asserts it’s “turbo-charging” its roll-out over the next 12 months, to deliver 5G cells on the the Optus Mobile Network around Australia as soon as possible.
