Sony looks to have taken the lead over its rivals when it comes to the high-end of the growing virtual reality tech market, with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan revealing that the company have shipped over 1 million PSVR headsets.

Speaking to Glixel, Ryan says “to be honest we didn’t know how well it would do.”

According to him, “we were optimistic, but something as completely different as virtual reality is tough to predict.”

Ryan also revealed that over 5 million PSVR games have been sold since launch.

He credits the success to Sony’s approach to marketing the headset, which treated PSVR as a platform rather than an accessory.

This new figure, roughly in line with their prior pledge to ship 1 million units within the first six months, places them well ahead of its competitors HTC and Oculus.

While the above haven’t gone public with their sales numbers, previous estimates have pegged the Vive at between 140,000 and 500,000 units shipped as of the end of 2016.

The relative silence by HTC and Oculus in the face of Sony’s proclamations about sales could suggest that this number hasn’t changed too much.
