So long Android?Samsung may be about to unleash its in-house operating system Tizen on mobile devices, in October, according to Sam mobile blog.
The unleashing of Linux based Tizen by the worlds biggest phone maker, would be at the expense of Google Android, the platform that propelled it to the No. 1 spot globally, blowing Apple, Nokia out of the water.
Tizen, like Android, is an open source OS, first developed by Linux but later Samsung took the reins in partnership with Intel. It is based on MeeGo (the OS used on Nokia’s N9) and LiMo (Linux Mobile).
It makes sense Samsung would champion its own OS, allowing greater control of its ecosystem and a point of difference in a sea of Androids – now on everything from mobiles, tabs, TVs to smartwatches.
Sam mobile blog reported: “Samsung will be unveiling its upcoming OS at the Samsung Developers Conference, which is set to take place on October 26-27 in San Francisco, California, and will also be having several sessions to discuss about the OS with developers and the company’s partners.”
Samsung CEO J.K. Shin has indicated he wants Tizen to be on everything, referring to it as “simple alternative for Android.”
The news comes as Samsung mobile growth slowed last quarter, as Chinese giant including Huawei, ZTE get ahead, particularly in their home market of China.
But its not just mobiles. Shin envisages to Tizen as a “cross category” platform.
It may power anything from cars (like Google’s self driving project), bank systems, industries and is working on such projects with Intel.
So, the skies the limit.
Samsung is believed launching the first Tizen smartphone in October in five countries. Australia does not appear to be included.
