Sony who saw their revenues and profits tumble in Australia last year is still betting on 3D to be a big winner for the Company who earlier today announced at the International CES Show in Las Vegas announced new investments in stereoscopic 3D TV technology, They also believe that they can knock off Samsung to once again become the world’s #1 consumer electronics Company.
At its press conference at the CES Show Sony rolled new 3D Bravia TV models using a clip from its new Sony Pictures movie, The Green Hornet. Seth Rogan and Jay Chou, the stars of the movie, drove out in a car from the film. It had machine guns on the hood and Chairman Sir Howard Stringer as a passenger.
Admitting that the Company has gone through a rough period Stringer said Sony is now much stronger and more profitable than it was a year ago. He said that the PlayStation Network now has more than 60 million registered users across Sony connected devices, including the PlayStation Portable, PS 3, and other devices however this is significantly behind the registered users for Xbox Live.
By the end of March he said that more than 50 million TV screens will be Internet-enabled by Sony connected TVs, PlayStation 3s, and Blu-ray players.
Stringer said he expects that more than 65 million internet-connected TVs will be sold in 2011. Beyond 3D, Sony is also preparing to launch TVs with higher resolution than 1080phigh-definition TVs. Known as 4k; these newer TVs have far more detail than today’s TVs.
Phil Molyneux, the new head of Sony Electronics in the U.S., said the company’s goal is to become the No. 1 vendor of consumer electronics (again) by 2013.
Despite poor 3D TV sales in the USA and still trailing behind Samsung in both the US and Australian markets, Stringer bragged that Sony was the 3D leader when it came to TV sales.
David Steele the head of Samsung operations in the USA said “Really”.
Earlier in the day Samsung said that it was the Korean Company not Sony who had sold more than 70 percent of the 3D TVs in North America in the past year.

Not to be outdone, Sony said that they will introduce 3D versions of its Bloggie camcorders and revamp its 3D authoring and playback products in an effort to be competitive. Panasonic already has a 3D camcorder.
Stringer said “3D is far more than a science fiction gimmick” to highlight special effects. 3D is merely a reflection of reality.”
