Telstra has hooked up with James Cameron on a deep sea expedition.
The telco will provide the Deep Sea Challenge expedition team led by the Titanic director with technology including satellite phones, Internet and VoIP communication system.
The joint project between Mr Cameron and the National Geographic Society will conduct deep-ocean research into what lies at the ocean’s deepest point eleven kilometres below the surface at Mariana Trench, in a submersible built in Australia.
As Global Telecommunications Partner, Telstra’s technology is providing the 70-strong crew with Full High Definition video broadcast transmission system, enabling live transmission of footage.

The Sydney built submersible has Aussie crew members onboard and test dives were conducted in Jervis Bay off NSW South Coast.
“It’s critical to have a really good telecommunications partner on this type of expedition. We want this to be something the public can embrace as it happens,” said Mr Cameron.
Australians will be among the first worldwide to join Oscar-winning Hollywood director on his historic journey undersea.
You can find out more about the expedition on Telstra’s YouTube channel or on Telstra T-Box.
Telstra will also be linking students from schools in Perth and Malibu, California via a live three-way connection directly to the boat so they can share in the excitement of scientific discovery.
