Our neighbours across the ditch are soon to discover the delights of digital free-to-air TV broadcast.
The NZ Government has confirmed digital TV will be introduced from 2007, under the Freeview brand used in the UK.
The main advantages of digital TV – improved picture resolution, sound and reception – will be welcomed by not only Kiwi AV buffs and rural residents suffering from poor picture quality but anyone with a widescreen TV.
The New Zealand Herald reported that Freeview is expected to be delivered both terrestrially, as in Australia, and directly to households via satellite.
New Zealand’s labour Government scrapped a digital TV proposal in 2000. It commenced in Australian capital cities in 2001 and over 1.5 million decoders have since been sold.
