Apple and Samsung are competing head to head in the smartphone market, upping screen resolutions, camera MP and processors. Now the two are trying to one up each other by making their next generation smartphones waterproof.
Word has it the circuitry inside Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and Apple’s iPhone 5 will be treated with a special nanocoating that repels water. This special technology is “a thousand times thinner than a human hair” and is delivered by a company called Liquipel.
The company had a stand at this year’s CES, showing off their merchandise by coating a tissue with the special solution and then submerging it into water. When they pulled it out, beads of water slid right off it, completely defying the tissue’s natural absorbing properties.

Word Apple and Samsung have commissioned Liquipel’s special coating comes from GSMArena, who are citing an “anonymous tipster who works for a large UK retailer.”
Samsung stands to benefit from the coating, minimising the number of enraged customers whose phones no longer work after experiencing ‘liquid ingression.’ Not only do they add another feature to their Galaxy’s rich repertoire, they also deliver an improved customer experience.
However, Apple charge aggrieved iPhone customers $287.30 for a replacement refurbished iPhone following damaging contact with water. Making their new iPhones water-resistant could hurt their business’ $13 billion bank account.
Motorola have long been advocates of the technology, coating their current RAZR flagship with similar technology.
