Aldi will offer a range of prepaid phones on its AldiMobile resale network.
Aldi’s late appeal with all sorts of tech has seen the grocer become a haven for cheap electronic goods. Most notably, the company has had success with their discount computers and tablets.

Now it appears Aldi will be going one step further by offering their own prepaid service as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO). Operating as AldMobile, Whirlpool discussions indicate the new service will use Telstra’s wholesale network and will offer two budget handsets.
The first smartphone is called Onix and is a 1.77 inch dual-sim feature phone with a $19.99 price tag. The second smartphone, Bauhn, is a 4.5 inch Android 4.1 smartphone. Its $199 price tag buys you dual-sim compatibility, a 960×540 resolution screen and 4GB of memory. Bauhn’s 850/2100MHz 3G network could see the second sim tray filled with a SIM card from either Telstra or Vodafone.

The website AldiMobile.com.au generates a countdown timer set to expire on the 6th of March. However, Aldi has already hinted its plan to enter the mobile space in its current catalogue with listings of the two aforementioned smartphones.
Aldi’s move to resell Telstra’s network echoes Kogan’s recent efforts with the launch Kogan Mobile in December of 2012. However, entering the MVNO space isn’t out of character for Aldi as, according to AusDroid, they currently operate Aldi Talk in Germany, Belgian and the Netherlands, and Aldi Suisse Mobile in Switzerland.
