Nokia’s parent company, HMD Global, are releasing the Nokia 5.1 Plus, marketed as the “gaming companion” geared towards gamers in Australia on 2nd November for $379.
The Nokia 5.1 Plus features a decent HD+ resolution 5.86″ edge-to-edge 19:9 aspect ratio display with a slim notch and 2.5D curved glass that’s ideal for watching videos, browsing and gaming with sharper images thanks to the higher resolution.
It has an octa-core MediaTek Helio P60 processor, with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage with the option of increasing memory with a microSD card up to 400GB. It’s packing a 3060mAh battery with charging via USB C.
The Nokia 5.1 Plus has dual rear lenses, with one primary 13MP f/2.0 lens backed up by a 5MP depth sensor, plus there’s an option for live Bokeh effect thanks to ‘Artificial Intelligence Assistance’ and electronic video stabilisation that provide steady, sharp, and in-focus videos. Additionally, there’s an 8MP f/2.2 front-facing camera.
It’s an Android One phone with Android Oreo 8.0, plus three years of Google security updates guaranteed, and the next two full Android OS updates.
Although it’s being marketed as a “gaming phone” it’s really just a midrange phone model that would be attractive to most consumers in this price range. While it may be attractive to certain budget gamers at this price, many might just save up for the Razer Phone 2 or a similar model instead.
The Nokia 5.1 Plus is available on Nokia’s website and will be in stores in Gloss Black from 2nd November in Australia including JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and Officeworks.
