There’s something bipolar about Dell’s Wyse computer.
Dell’s Wyse, also known as Project Ophelia, is the size of a thumbdrive and brings Android (Ice Cream Sandwich) to your television by plugging it into the HDMI port. Its sub-$100 price covers a 1.6GHz dual core ARM processor, 8GB of internal memory, and equips it with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity.
After some thought it makes sense why Dell chose to name it after Hamlet’s bipolar sister. It’s Android, a touch based platform, on a big screen, like a tablet, but the television isn’t touch, so it’s like a big phone, without the phone, so it’s a big mobile computer, but it’s not conventionally computer software.
What you end up with is Google’s vast application support, a vast video-on-demand content library and the internet delivered to your big screen.
It is possible replicate Windows on your television by running Ophelia’s “Thin-Client” software and connecting it to your thin Windows client/server system at work. It’ll also connect securely to back-end systems from all leading infrastructure providers including Citrix, Microsoft and VMware.
It’s Android and Windows, a little bipolar after all. Dell’s Project Ophelia will be available later in the first half of 2013.
