E Ink, the company that makes the display technology used by Amazon’s Kindle and other e-readers, has announced new technology that will deliver colour e-book screens.
Dubbed Triton, it will display “thousands” of colours, in addition to 16 levels of grayscale, the company said.
E Ink says the technology is ideal for showing charts, graphs, maps, photos, comics and advertising. But since it refreshes relatively slowly, the colour version will still not be ideal for displaying video.
Hanvon, a Chinese group, will be the first to use Triton to produce a colour e-reader – pictured – E Ink said.
Jennifer Colegrove, director of display technologies at DisplaySearch, called the launch of Triton a “milestone moment”. “This is a very important development – it will bring e-readers to a higher level,” she said.
