The new Sony Touch reader costs up to $299 and uses an infrared sensor to read finger swipes or taps from a stylus which is included with the reader.
Sony claim that their product is superior to the offering from Kindle, because it has a higher-contrast electronic ink display that now delivers 16 shades of gray.
In a recent review of the Kindle Vs the iPad Vs the Sony Touch Edition Reader Andy Ihnatk of the Chicago Sun Times said ‘The Sony Reader Touch Edition little costs more than a Kindle (based on US pricing. Sony Australia who are known for price gouging are selling the same model for $79 dearer than the same Kindle) without the flexibility of the iPad or the huge library of the Kindle, a Sony Reader requires its user to be a little more savvy and proactive about finding content…I don’t think it delivers the no-brainer experience that first time e-book users are looking for.
The new Australian edition comes with 2 gigabytes of memory. The Daily Edition, which uses both 3G and Wi-Fi technology, is not going to be launched in Australia.
Users in Australia will need to sync their books via USB. The provided software works on both Mac and PC. Both JB Hi Fi and Harvey Norman said that they will not be selling the Sony E Reader offering.
