Microsoft has revealed that touch-friendly Office apps are coming to Windows Phone smartphones, with an Office apps preview for Windows 10 for smartphones expected to be available by the end of the month.Microsoft’s next-gen mobile Office Universal apps suite, “designed for on-the-go productivity”, follows the release of its preview of Office apps for desktop earlier in the year.
Via a blog post, Jared Spataro, general manager for the Office marketing team, stated the touch-first apps, built for tablets and smartphones, are “optimised for viewing, quick edits, notes and mark-up”.
“On a tablet, the Universal apps are fast, fluid and streamlined for an immersive, hands-on experience,” Spataro wrote. “They’re fantastic for reading and perfect for touch-and-pen-based content creation.
“On a phone, the Universal apps adapt to the smaller form factor. Commands and controls are moved to the bottom of the screen so you can triage your work and make edits one-handed with your thumb.”
The Windows Phone Office apps, which will join Microsoft’s previously released Office apps for iOS and Android, will be available with the Windows 10 technical preview in the coming weeks.
