Nikon has officially unveiled its D850 DSLR camera capable of shooting 45.7-megapixel images, 4K UHD video, and Full HD slow motion video.
Following up on the company’s D810 released in 2014, Nikon said the D850 is aimed at the growing “hybrid” wedding photographer market that requires stills and video shooting capabilities, as well as nature, events and fashion photographers.
“Technology has transformed content creation today – and Nikon’s innovation in evolving its imaging technologies and product range,” said Nikon Australia MD James Murray.
The D850’s 45.7-megapixel CMOS sensor, combined with the EXPEED 5 image-processing engine, is capable of continuously shooting up to 9 fps, while a native ISO range of 64-25,600 (expandable to 32-102,400) and an extended low metering limit enable auto exposure in low lighting.
A ‘silent photography’ feature also allows photographers to shoot in situations when noise from the shutter isn’t desirable by using live view and the electronic shutter.
“Engineered with this line-up of features and performance enhancements to our FX-format range, this camera truly is a showcase of our dedication to delivering superior photo and video imaging quality that caters to our diverse range of photographers,” Murray said.
A wide range of NIKKOR lenses are supported by the D850, and when the camera is combined with a micro lens and film holder, it can convert negative film into 45-megapixel digital images.
Full-frame 4K UHD video can be shot at up to 30fps, while Full HD increases the frame rate options up to 120fps for slow motion video. The D850 also features a tilting 3.2-inch touch screen with 2359k-dot LCD monitor and button illumination.
The D850 will be available in September in a kit with a AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR lens or on its own. Pricing hasn’t yet been announced for Australia, but the camera carries a price tag equivalent to about $4,175 in the United States.
