Optus has thrown down the gauntlet against Telstra and launched its new 5G smartphone range, starting with the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and Oppo Reno 5G.
The news comes after Telstra advised it’d inked an ‘exclusive’ deal with several of the world’s biggest brands to stock its 5G phones for the first half of 2019.
The deal allowed Telstra customers to be among the first in Australia to access 5G phones, with Samsung offering a free upgrade to a Galaxy S10 5G for selected Telstra customers.
The entry of Optus into the telco 5G phone market is likely to pressurise market prices, triggering broader discounts over time across the board.
Optus Head of Product, Shaun Van Graan, claims the telco’s 5G mobile phones plans will be “some of the most competitive plans in market.”
Marketed as its ‘Hero Offer’, Optus is offering the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G (256GB) on a 36 month My Plus plan for $110 per month (includes $85 My Plan Plus + $25 handset repayment) boasting 80GB + 20GB bonus monthly data (min. total cost $3,960 over 36 months).
Customers who sign up before October 7 will also receive a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active (Black).
Optus’ ‘Hero Offer’ for the Reno 5G (256GB) will launch on the My Plus Plan for $90 per month (includes $85 My Plan Plus + $5 handset repayment) with 80GB + 20GB bonus monthly data (min. total cost $3,240 over 36 months).
Customers who sign up before October 24 will receive a free pair of Bose QuietComfort 35 wireless headphones II (Black).
The news comes as Optus continues to roll out its 5G network with close to 200 mobile sites live.
Further announcements about its 5G mobile plans are expected in coming weeks.
“Customers on selected Optus plans can now also spend time streaming more than 50 million songs anytime with Optus offering Apple Music for up to 12-months free.”
Optus continues to focus on rolling out its 5G network with close to 200 mobile sites live. We will make further announcements on our 5G mobile plans coming weeks,” adds Mr Van Graan.
“Recently awarded the 2019 Phone on a Plan, Provider of the Year by Canstar Blue, Optus customers have access to exclusive content such as every Premier League and UEFA Champions League match live on Optus Sport.”
Optus has continued to expand its content arsenal, despite previous technical issues around its soccer World Cup coverage.
