European consumer electronics group Philips, is open to the idea of re-entering the Australian TV market as long as they can deliver profitability said a senior executive who today announced the appointment of Melbourne based distributor Powermove, to sell a range of Philips Hi fi and iPod gear.
Sanjay De, senior manager, business development manager, for Philips in Australia told ChannelNews that he had already got several calls from Australian distributors and specialist resellers wanting to sell the new range of Philips eco TV’s that are currently getting rave reviews in Europe.
“If rave reviews translated into profits we would be doing brilliantly well but unfortunately we have not been able to find a profitable model for our TV’s in Australia. I did not want to pull out of the Australian market. In the future if we can see a profit driven model we will not be averse to getting back into the TV market” said DE.
He added “we do not need to have 10 to 15% market share we need profitability. We have the range in Europe and several Australian resellers have approached me to sell the Philips European panel because it can be hooked up to a set top box or Foxtel player”.
Earlier today, De announced the appointment of Powermove to sell the Philips range of audio visual products in Australia. He said “we chose Powermove because of the companys track record and their relationship with retailers in Australia.”
De, who has been in Australia two years and nine years with Philips, also worked in the UK which is a similar market to Australia.
